Classic Lowry paintings on sho

POWDERHAM Castle might be 600 years old - but this weekend it is playing host to paintings by one of the 20th century's most acclaimed artists.

The brochure printing display of original paintings and drawings by L S Lowry is valued at more than Pounds 500,000 and is the highlight of Powderham's antiques and fine art fair.

Lowry, who died in 1976, was an artist from Lancashire who specialised in portraying scenes of life in the working class industrial districts of Northern England during the mid 20th centur y.

His distinctive style of painting is best recognised by muted coloured urban landscapes people with human figures known as "matchstick men".

When he died, Lowry left a cultural legacy - and his works often sell for millions of pounds.

Manchester's gallery The Lowry opened in 2000 and houses 55 paintings and 278 drawings by the artist - the world's largest collection of his work.

However, Replica fendi wholesale some works are not in the museum - instead they will be shown at Powderham Castle by David Smith, of Neptune Fine Art from Derbyshire, who specialises in original works by Lowry.

Among the highlights of this weekend's paintings is one of typical Lowry street figures in an industrial setting, priced at Pounds 325,000 - the most expensive exhibit ever offered for sale at the twice-yearly fair.

"It's a beautiful painting and classic Lowry stuff," explained Mr Smith.

The painting is signed and dated 1953 and was recently on public display at The Potteries Museum & Art Gallery, Hanley, Stoke-on- Trent.

Another typical Lowry work features a street scene with figures, signed and dated Replica prada wholesale August 21, 1958, and bearing the stamp of the Castle Hotel, Berwick.

The work was given by Lowry to a rather lucky boy, whose father asked Lowry for an autograph when they met at the hotel.

Mr Smith said: "Its provenance makes this drawing particularly special, since everyone wants to know the history of every Lowry work. We have some beautiful sketches as well by Lowry."

Other collections on show at the Cooper Antiques Fair at Powderham, near Exeter, this weekend include a range of Exeter silver dating from 1600 to 1900, and 18th and 19th century paintings of Westcountry scenes.
