Sainsbury's stampede for [poun

AN EXCLUSIVE [pounds sterling]5 handbag, which had women queuing through the night, is now selling on the internet for up to [pounds sterling]240.

Shoppers in North Derbyshire and South Yorkshire queued from 2am yesterday, then stampeded through supermarket doors, to get their hands on the handbag - a limited-edition version of a shoulder bag by top designer Anya Hindmarch.

The eco-friendly fabric 'bag for life' - with the slogan 'I'm not a plastic bag' - has been sported by celebrities in all the glossy magazines. No more bags are being manufactured for the UK market, making the accessory a fashion must-have.

Shoppers were given the chance to get their hands on the bags for just [pounds sterling]5 in a special sale at Sainsbury's supermarkets yesterday - and each store had just 30 bags to sell in the one-off promotion.

Within hours of selling out the bags were already being advertised on the internet. Desperate shoppers could pay [pounds sterling]150 outright to buy them online or take their chances by bidding in auctions.

One website claimed there had been an "unprecedented, bloody, customer stampede, the like of which has never been seen" for the bags.

The sale of the bag, advertised in national magazines and on Sainsbury's website, started at 8am yesterday.

The first 30 people in the queues were given a ticket to exchange in store for a bag.

Lucky 18-year-old Amy McDonald, from Chesterfield, was one of the few to bag a bag.

She said: "I really wanted one because all the celebrities have them and they were just [pounds sterling]5. We turned up to Sainsbury's in Chesterfield at 6am and there were people already there. One woman said she had been there since 4am in a sleeping bag!"

But there was outrage from some customers who managed to get 'golden tickets' for bags at Sainsbury's in Dronfield - only to find the store only had 20 bags available.

Julie Arnold, aged 44, and her 16-year-old daughter Lucy were desperate for the bags.

Julie, from Dronfield, said: "By 7.45am there were 30 of us queueing and the staff started giving out tickets. I was number 21. But when we entered the store they said they were very sorry but there were no bags left as 10 had gone missing."

Dawn Whitby, 32, from Woodhouse, also missed out when she queued at Sainsbury at Crystal Peaks. She said: "I got here at 7.20am with my eight-month-old baby Emily and three-year-old daughter Charlotte but there were already a lot of people who had started queuing in the night. I was miffed at getting my children up at 6am to find people started queuing last night. I'm getting too old for all this!"

Sainsbury's said it had launched an investigation into the missing bags in Dronfield and apologised to the 10 disappointed customers.
